Scouting is the out door work of children and adults alike. outside is full of adventure and mystery. Scouting opens up a wide world of wonder and awe. Outdoor geography is the hands on work of geography. It is a concrete. Children do well with concrete ideas that lead to abstract ideas. Learning geography only from books and maps is rather difficult because they contain abstract ideas. That is where outdoor geography, scouting, comes in. Scouting is to geography what nature study is to science. From the hills to your property line. From playing at the park to walking (running) on the trail. Kids are always learning. Scouting is using what children are already inclined to do. They naturally use discovery mixed with curiosity in their play. That is what scouting does, it helps to guide them to care more about the world around them and to find their way in it.
