In the 1950s, basketball in Indiana was a big deal. School rivalries and hometown pride created an atmosphere much like that depicted in the movie “Hoosiers.” However, in reality, the high school basketball Goliaths frequently dominated the smaller school Davids. The state tournament’s later rounds were hosted by the bigger schools because they had bigger gyms, increasing the chances that they would win on their home floor. In one Indiana community, a group of citizens got tired of waiting for their local school corporation to build a bigger gym and took matters into their own hands. Fieldhouse of Dreams is the story of how the construction of the world’s largest and finest high school fieldhouse fulfilled the dream of those determined movers and shakers.
