English summary: Piracy has been more firmly returned to the public's attention thanks to the countless encroachments off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden. Therefore, Operation Atalanta is not only about the protection of civilian sea traffic, but also about questions concerning statehood, international trade and economic interests. Significantly these various aspects of the modern discussion were already applicable for an earlier age, so that an epoch-spanning consideration of piracy immediately suggests itself for consideration. The first part of this volume illuminates piracy in antiquity, the Middle Ages and the early modern period. In the second part, the problem of modern piracy is thoroughly treated from various points of view. Here, the focus rests on Somalia and piracy off the coasts of countries. Consequently, this volume shows the diverse aspects, as well as the continuities, of piracy and contributes to a nuanced, history-spanning comprehension of this phenomenon from antiquity to the present. Volker Grieb ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Helmut Schmidt-Universitat / Universitat der Bundeswehr in Hamburg. Er wurde 2006 an der Universitat Hamburg bei J.
