When Leonie bears the child of a casual lover, Monsieur's vengeance is terrible and casts a shadow over the rest of her life until his death sets her free. Leonie believes her destiny is ruled by Sekhmet, an Egyptian goddess, but neither the Egyptian connection nor other exotic locales (Brazil, Cuba, Florida) are ever really brought to life.
