This book is dedicated to the many family members who struggle due to the addiction to drugs or alcohol of their loved ones. In so many ways, the struggle becomes a family affair. No one suffers from addiction alone, contrary to popular opinion. It accounts for my life and the lives of others, as a recovering family member of a loved one suffering from drug addiction. This book is divided into three sections. The first section is “Reality and Realization”. Reality is a known fact; something is real. When it comes to the drug abuse of our loved ones, many times we do not see it. The reality is that the addiction is occurring and taking place. Realization is the act of being fully aware of something as a fact. This is when the family member admits the drug abuse of their loved one and accepts it as being true and real, showing awareness of the situation and its occurrence. The next section of the book is “Responding and Reacting”. Responding to something means giving an answer or a response. The response can be negative or positive, sometimes it can be with words or actions. This book will cover the different ways we respond and react to our loved ones who suffer from drug addiction. The last section of the book is “Resolution and Recovery”. Resolution is to decide and resolve an issue, solving a problem. Recovery is to overcome a perceived or known problem. As I mentioned before, drug addiction becomes a family affair, and everyone must go through a recovery process. We, as family members, tend to develop unhealthy emotional problems as we strive to "fix" our loved ones' addiction, therefore causing pain and sorrow for ourselves. It is my hope and desire that we all find ourselves in the recovery process where healing can take place.
