Everyone is afraid of death! For the Holy Scripture always exhorts us to be vigilant and prepared, as we do not know the day or the hour of our meeting with God (cf. Mt 25:13; Lk 12:40). It is not through terror, or through flight, that we will prepare for our death, but through a holy life in the grace of God and through faith that works through charity (cf. Gal 5:6). However, we also need to ask the Lord for final perseverance, as we distrust ourselves, to pray to die in a state of grace, in peace with the Lord, with people and with ourselves, and thus to meet Him calmly, not seeing Him as a Judge, but as our loving God. A gentle death, "in which the soul falls asleep in the Lord, is, in the expression of the Councils, the grace of graces, which can never be asked for too much, which cannot be strictly earned, but which can be obtained through prayer and faithful cooperation with grace..."[1] In this booklet, then, in the manner of the Liturgy of the Hours, we combine reading of Holy Scripture, with adapted prayers of Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, from the Liturgy of the Catholic Church and other acts of piety to supplicate for a good and holy death.
