Framework Math: The workbook series Developing Number Sense Using Ten Frames and a Rekenrek Helping students of all ages and all stages understand and enjoy Math! Framework Math is a program centered around a 5-volume workbook series designed to help students develop number sense as they work towards mastery of Addition • Subtraction • Multiplication • Division with the use of ten frames and a Rekenrek. Do you want to help your youngest learners develop the skills, strategies, and confidence they will need to lay a solid foundation in Math? Do you want to help older students who are struggling with Math to “retrofit” their Math foundation, and rekindle a love for learning? Do you want to challenge Math lovers of any age to think more deeply about how Math works? Because these foundational concepts are truly ageless and students often still need help with the basics even once they get to higher level Math classes, these books are designed to be approachable to learners of any age and skill level without pictures or language that can be alienating to older students. Many students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, or other learning struggles have found this curriculum to be revolutionary in helping them see the big picture of HOW Math works, enjoy the learning process, and feel confident again in themselves as learners. These books are designed to help students build a strong foundation in number sense as they master the four basic operations. What is Number Sense? Number Sense is an intuitive sense of how numbers work; as students learn HOW numbers work, they develop the confidence and skillset to use numbers freely and flexibly. How do we help our kids develop this elusive intuition about numbers? Students will perfect their strategies and master the art of operating on numbers through hands-on activities, games, challenges, and anything but traditional skill-and-drill worksheets. Fluency with Math will come as a “side effect” of this deep understanding coupled with high-interest practice activities using these strategies with increasingly larger numbers. Volume 1: Foundations In this volume, students will learn how to work strategically with ten frames and a Rekenrek in order to: Subitize within 5, 10, 20, and 100, - Compose & decompose numbers in groups of 1’s and 10’s, - See 6 – 10 as 5 + (something), and 11-20 as 10 + (something), and - Partition numbers (especially 10) into all possible combinations. This lays the foundation for the next book where students will learn to rearrange numbers into instantly recognizable amounts, so that addition becomes much less about counting and much more about just seeing the answers. A condensed version is also available for older students who may need a review of or introduction to subitizing, composing and decomposing numbers up to 100, combinations of 10, and place value using ten frames and a Rekenrek.
